Acknowledgments Initial versions of the contributions collected in this volume were first presented at the conference on “Do We Need National or European Champions?” at CESifo in Munich, Germany, in November 2007. The conference was part of the project “How to Construct Europe,” funded by the German Leibniz Association, whose support we gratefully acknowledge. The included papers are a peer-reviewed selection from the set of papers presented at the conference. We hope that the volume documents a fruitful example of building bridges, bringing together leading scholarly perspectives from both sides of the Atlantic. Our thanks go to all contributors for sharing their research results with an international audience.
