Note on Sources Personal interviews, both oral and written, provided the bulk of the information used in this book. Complete copies of transcripts of these interviews are housed in the Oakland City University Barger-Richeson Library Archives. The following people shared their insights through interviews regarding Ken Kays’ early years, his Southern Illinois University and Woodstock experiences, and his final days before he took his life: Kenny Boster, Rodney Cross, Douglas Gowler, Joe Keoughan, John Keoughan, Terry McGaha, Marshall Mills, Mike Pottorff, Randy Reed, Jon Simpson, Aaron Steiner, and David Trovillion (Steiner). Kays’ experiences in Vietnam were made more understandable through the interviews of the following: John “Curt” Alexander, Steve “Greek” Avgerinos, Michael Bookser, Tony Cox, Kenneth David, Sammy L. Davis (Medal of Honor recipient), Richard “Dick” Doyle, Richard Drury, Dean Finch, Steve Gunn, Kurt Maag, Ralph Matkin, Larry McElroy, Greg Phillips, Gilbert “Gib” Rossetter, Gordon Scheerhorn, John Smith, and Dale Tauer. A number of personal letters were made available for this work by Michael Bookser, Kenneth David, and Steve Gunn. These letters greatly assisted the author in conveying a better understanding of the conditions faced by those who served in Vietnam. Portions of Kenneth Kays’ personal journal were provided by Michael Pottorff . Several newspapers were used in this project, including the Wayne County Press, the Evansville Courier, the Evansville Courier and Press, the Southern Illinoisan, the Southern Illinois University student newspaper, the Daily Egyptian, the Los Angeles Times, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and the Washington Post.
