The repertoire for euphonium and brass ensemble remains a fragment compared to the other large ensemble categories. There are fewer brass ensembles around the globe and the euphonium is not always an included member of brass ensemble compositions and arrangements. Therefore, it makes sense that it would not represent a popular choice to compose for this performance medium. Luckily, some composers have ventured on this path and created some unique works. Euphonium solo and brass ensemble (nonet). 10:00. This work contains some dissonant parts and contains a story line of two tribes (one depicted by the high brass, the other the low brass). Written in two sections, Andante and Allegro opens with brass ensemble chords with the euphonium playing a melody with sixteenth note pickups . The harmonic language is slightly chromatic. The Allegro section hosts a lighthearted feeling featuring rhythmic accompaniment figures with a solo melody with many quarter note triplets. Euphonium solo and brass ensemble (4.1.4.0.1.0). 2002. $40. 8:30. IV. c–c. Originally composed for oboe, the Concerto in C Minor works very well for euphonium and brass ensemble in this arrangement. Care must be taken because the solo part remains in the upper range for most of the solo and there are few rests. The style also dictates that the solo playing should be light and soft. The solo part is written entirely in tenor clef and contains nothing terribly unusual in regards to baroque compositions. The main challenges will be style in the solo and ensemble parts, endurance, and ensuring the technical passages sound glib. Some of the most famous euphonium concerti have been produced by the prolific brass band composers in the United Kingdom (Horovitz, Ellerby, Golland, Sparke, Wilby to name but a few). The composer ’s interest to write for this medium certainly evolved from the prominence that the principal, or solo, euphonium plays in the brass band. Many confer that the solo euphonium stands only second to the solo cornet in importance in the brass band, and this role creates high demands on players when works are written with brass 4.
