I would like to thank Routledge for permission to reprint portions of my essay “Gender and Religion in England ’s Catholic Province,” in Women and Religion in Old and New Worlds, edited by Susan Dinan and Debra Meyers (New York: Routledge, 2001), 213– 230. Early on, the Susan B. Anthony Institute at the University of Rochester helped fund several research trips to Maryland, and the guidance I received at the university from Lynn Gordon, Brenda Meehan, Linda Levy Peck, Jean Pedersen, and the late Christopher Lasch laid the groundwork for my inquiry .
