Appendix 4 Comparative Table: Revisions to the Final Chorus of Joseph The boxes in each column indicate the individual sections of Méhul’s and Fränzl’s versions, placed in sequential order from top to bottom. The numbers within the boxes indicate the number of measures in each section. Heavy-lined arrows between the boxes show Fränzl’s direct borrowings of Méhul’s original music (sometimes Fränzl expands the music through repetition ). Much of the libretto for this new ¤nale is adapted from one of the most common German translations of the work, by Carl August Herklots, and thin lines show sections in which Fränzl used these textual borrowings. ...
