Welcome to Quick Hits for Service-Learning, the fifth volume in the Quick Hits series, sponsored by the Indiana University Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) in conjunction with Indiana Campus Compact (ICC). Founded in 1993, ICC is a network of over 40 college and university campuses in Indiana that supports higher education’s efforts to develop students into well-informed, engaged citizens. By providing programs, services, and resources, ICC serves as a catalyst for campuses and communities to improve people’s lives through service-learning and civic engagement initiatives. One way in which ICC serves as a change agent is to work directly with faculty on the development or enhancement of service-learning courses. In 1995, ICC introduced the Faculty Fellows’ Program to allow faculty members from a wide variety of disciplines and across institutional types to come together to refine their service-learning courses while working collaboratively on a group project to advance the field of service-learning. Over the last 15 years, over 100 fellows have participated and, in cohorts of eight faculty members per year, have taken on a number of projects. This fifth volume, Quick Hits for Service-Learning, is one such project. Quick Hits for Service-Learning was born from the 2007-2008 ICC Faculty Fellows’ cohort. The eight Faculty Fellows served as the original editorial board for this project during the 2007-2008 academic year. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the many hours they contributed to this project, including the main concept behind this volume – to create a tangible, practical, hands-on resource focused on the development of a service-learning course through the ingredients one should consider while fully baking one’s ideas into reality. The organization of the chapters by our editors was done intentionally to showcase the depth and breadth of discipline areas that have developed innovative strategies to involve students in the process of serving to learn and learning to serve. The submissions to this volume from around the globe truly highlight experiences and suggestions from educators to educators on the development of a service-learning course.
