Acknowledgments We all know that it takes a community of colleagues, friends, and family to produce a book, especially one that covers four decades of thinking and writing. Literally, hundreds of people have contributed to this collection, from those feminist scholars I have come to know through their wonderful work to many colleagues and close friends whose support and love I greatly value. I would, however, like to acknowledge a few people here who have been especially important to me over the years. First, I would like to thank Laurie Matheson, editor in chief of the University of Illinois Press, for asking me to undertake this project. I am honored by this request and grateful to her and to longtime friend and colleague Beverley Diamond, general editor of the Women and Music Series, for their support and for their faith in me and in this work. I am also grateful for the earlier help and support received from my “ethno-mother,” Carolina Robertson, who walked part of this path with me. I am especially grateful to the “FemEth Group” (you know who you are!) for your continued support, great conversations, and a lot of laughter—from the early days, when we squirreled ourselves away in hotel rooms, talking in low voices, to the present day, when we celebrate with loud, boisterous dinners .
