13 Seeing California with Edward Weston “New Roads for Those Ready to Travel” ApplyingforaGuggenheimFellowshipintheautumnofEdwardWeston describedhis“planofwork”injusttwosentences:“Iwishtocontinuean epicseriesofphotographsoftheWest,begunabout;thiswillincludea rangefromsatiresonadvertisingtoranchlife,frombeachkelptomountains. Thepublicationoftheaboveseemsassured.”Histersenesswassurprising inasmuchasnophotographerhadeverheldaGuggenheim,andsowashis jauntinessaboutpublicationwhichrestedontheslenderreedofagallery’s schemetounderwriteitbysolicitingsubscribers.Buthewasconfidentthe thirty-fiveprintssupportinghisapplicationabundantlydemonstratedhis qualificationsandthathismanyexhibitionssincehisfirstNewYorkshowsix yearsearlierindicatedhisnationalstanding.1 ThenextspringhereceivedaGuggenheim—althoughnotbeforeamplifying hisapplicationattheurgingofDorotheaLangeandPaulTaylor—and 247 Seeing California with Edward Weston embarkedonhismostproductivecreativeperiod,makingsome,photographs ofwhatinhisrevisedapplicationhecalled“MYWesternscene.”Thesepictures occupyanhonoredplaceinphotographichistory,preeminentlyfortheirextraordinary formalexcellence,andhavealsooccasionedconsiderablebiographicalspeculation aboutwhethertheyintimatedhiselegiacapprehensionofanapproaching mortality.Weston’sspecialambitionsforhisprojecthaveremainedobscure,however, ashaveitsculturaldimensions.Becauseculturalhistorianshaveneglectedit,their accountsofthirtiesphotographyhavebeenpartialinmakingdocumentaryseem tohavebeentheonlysignificantpractice.Thatisparticularlymisleadingbecause Weston’sGuggenheimphotographsenjoyeduncommonlywidedissemination,to thedegreethatmorelikelyreachedagreaternumberofviewersthanpicturesby otherleadingphotographersexceptthemagazinists.Infindingsuchapopularaudience theyachievedoneofhisambitionsandhelpedfulfillthatofphotography’sart worldtomakeitsfinesteffortsintegraltothenation’sculturallife.2 Weston’sproject’smostenduringmemorialisCaliforniaandtheWest,published inandreproducingninety-sixphotographswithatextbyhiswife,Charis WilsonWeston.Theintensifiedpublicinterestinartfulphotographymadeita plausiblecommercialundertakingforaNewYorkpublisher,asitwouldnothave beenadecadeearlier,anditoweditsexistenceaswelltoU.S.Camera,whichsponsored thebook.ItshandsomelyreproducedphotographsamplyrevealedWeston’s virtuosity,butinasmuchasCharis’stextdeterminedtheirsequence,glossedtheir subjects,andhintedathisintentions,theirbookneedstobeunderstoodasacollaborative effortwithothervalencesthansolelydemonstratinghisformalgenius.Her intimateaccountoftheirextensivetravelsandofhismakingofthephotographs expandedCaliforniaandtheWestbeyondanartbook’susualboundaries.Charis’s emphasisonautobiographygavehispicturesthiscolorationaswell,anditalso associatedthevolumewithtwoothergenresthatflourishedinthethirties,theroad bookandtheguidebooktowesterntravel.Andwhilehisphotographs’formalrigor oftenintimatedabstractpropositionsaboutthenaturalworld’sindivisibility,asurprising numberalsoexhibitedtemporalpreoccupations,especiallyabouttheeffects ofhumaninterventionsonthewesternlandscapeandtheirgenesisinAmerican culturalattitudes.CaliforniaandtheWestthuspermitsaricherunderstandingof Weston’sartisticandculturalambitions,complicatingthestandardviewofhimas adedicatedformalistwhosomehowevadedtheimpressofhisculture.3 Thatthisviewhasbeensocustomary,however,isnotsurprisingbecauseamong themajorphotographersoftheinterwaryearsWestonseemedmostdisengaged fromthemaincurrentsofAmericanlife.Hehadbegunasapictorialistaround butafterWorldWarIembracedstraightphotographyanddestroyedmuchofthis earlierwork.AlfredStieglitz’sapprobationinofhisrecentimages,modernist inform,confirmedhiminhisnewdirection,whichhecontinuedtopursueduring [3.15.219.217] Project MUSE (2024-04-24 21:01 GMT) 248 A Staggering Revolution twoMexicansojournsinthemid-twenties.ShortlyafterhereturnedtoCalifornia inhebeganthesculpturalstudiesofshells,vegetables,kelp,fungi,cypresses, androcksforwhichheisstillperhapsbestknownandwhichpreoccupiedhiminto theearlythirties.
