29 The฀Little฀Pastor In the old country the little pastor used to take care of the ships. But once he fell into a deep sleep. Then wolves came and ate all the ships. So the scavengers descended. It was desert in the old country, it was brushfires and dustbowls . It was whiplash too, as you might expect. So in the furthest valley the laborers saw a forest with trees and sunshine , an orderly allotment of greens. Now this forest bordered the desert and the desert bordered the sun; and the old country was the land of sun and coffee and peach trees. And the little pastor woke from his sleep of centuries. He cried, “Listen to me! I was amazed before you! I froze and came back in time, and wept over the eclipse.” So was the little pastor made guardian of the land beyond the mountains.
