Table 1 Chronological Listing of Nietzsche’s Philosophical Reading The first column lists the authors and titles. A dagger (†) signifies that Nietzsche may not have read the work (or not read it in the year listed). The second column (BN) lists whether the book is available in Nietzsche’s private library with a “Y” for yes. Asterisks after the “Y” indicate light (*), medium (**), and heavy (***) annotations made by Nietzsche in his copy of the book. Some books present in his library, without asterisk indication, nonetheless contain some minor annotations or other signs of having been read. Parentheses around the “Y” means that the work has been lost from the library. The third column gives short comments about Nietzsche’s reading of and response to the book. The term “p-ref” means that Nietzsche refers to specific page(s) of the work. The last column gives the reference where Nietzsche mentions, or discusses, the book (a two- or three-digit number for letters, as published in KSB and KGB, and a number containing brackets for his notebooks, as published in KSA and KGW). Letters to Nietzsche are identified by date. The young Nietzsche’s writings are referred to as BAW (see note on references). GSA refers to unpublished papers in the Goethe and Schiller archive in Weimar.
