The Obama Haters
Behind the Right-Wing Campaign of Lies, Innuendo & Racism
Publication Year: 2011
The Obama Haters seeks to answer the following questions: Who are these Obama haters? Why do they despise him? Why do various news organizations, commentators, and political entities treat the same facts differently? Why are these pundits so powerful? In order to do so, Wright first lays out the democratic principles and civility toward which Americans should strive. Next, he investigates the persistent expressions of hatred for President Obama, connecting historic antecedents of political mudslinging along with the background of virulent right-wing smear tactics over the past two decades. And finally, he shines a harsh spotlight on the haters and fearmongers and their tactics.
While Americans have the right to criticize their political leadership, their reasons for disapproval should be based on facts. Those who invent and repeat lies to hurt the reputation of leaders weaken the democratic ideal. This book is for anyone who wishes to learn how to cut through the hypocrisy and propaganda to make informed decisions based on truth.

The 2008 presidential election was the longest and most expensive in U.S. history. It was also among the nastiest. Barack Obama, not even midway through his freshman term in the U.S. Senate, announced his candidacy on February 10, 2007, nearly two years before Inauguration Day. He wasn’t even the first. Obama joined other candidates from both major political parties already scurrying...
This book would not exist without the wise counsel of my multi-talented agent, Alison Picard, who helped me shape and market my idea and guided me through the process of transforming a great but sketchy idea into reality. Nor would it exist without my editor, Hilary Claggett, who saw potential in my proposal and my ability to complete the task. My uncle, Bernard...
INTRODUCTION: How a Positive Campaign Faced the Onslaught of Smears and Still Remained Positive
He is described as the Antichrist, a Muslim, a traitor, a socialist, a fascist, a communist, an America hater, a racist, a baby killer, a “pal of terrorists,” a sexual libertine, the devil, mentally unstable, and even a foreigner with a forged birth certificate. His wife is said to be “angry” and is accused of using racial slurs and having a “hit list” of people...
1 How an Unknown Inspired Hope in Millions and Became a Target for Hatemongers
Most Americans felt good about the election of Barack Hussein Obama as the forty-fourth president of the United States on November 4, 2008. The nation had finally overcome its most hurtful, shameful, and enduring legacy—the enslavement of one group of people by another. Even after emancipation, there continued to be decades of denying equal rights, prejudice, overt and hidden racism...
2 Falsehoods About Obama Echo Endlessly, Even After Debunking
Nearly everyone in public life has been smeared. Celebrities and average people have been cast into the limelight—perhaps thrown to the wolves—for their fleeting fifteen minutes of fame. Just ask Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, who obsequiously thrust himself before the klieg lights when Obama was campaigning in Ohio. Within days the whole world knew that Joe...
3 Barack the Magic Negro: How Racism Oozes from Extremists into Mainstream Media
After electing the first president of African descent, most Americans wanted to see their country evolve into a post-racial society in which people are judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously saw in a dream. The Obama haters, however, don’t want to move on. They hurl filthy racial epithets and have the chutzpah...
4 Loons and Losers Challenge Obama’s Birth Certificate and Legitimacy
Barack Hussein Obama II entered this world on August 4, 1961, at the Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women & Children in Honolulu, Hawaii, to mother Stanley Ann Dunham (born in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas) and father Barack Hussein Obama, a Kenyan. It’s easy to confirm. That’s what his birth certificate says. Starting in the...
5 Can You Prove Your Innocence?
In the heartbreaking 2009 feature film The Stoning of Soraya M., a philandering husband who wants to marry his fourteen-year-old girlfriend enlists the corrupt mullah and mayor of his isolated Iranian village in a scheme to accuse his faithful wife of adultery so she could be stoned to death under Islamic sharia law and free him from paying alimony. The mayor confronts Soraya and asks her, “Can..
6 The Obama Trifecta: Amazingly a Socialist, Communist, and Fascist Simultaneously
When Obama took office on January 21, 2009, the stock market and real estate values had suffered their most precipitous crash since the Great Depression, unemployment was the highest it had been in three decades, and consumer confidence was nearly destroyed. Americans were ready to unite behind their new leader with a mandate to initiate bold endeavors to reinvigorate the economy and their belief in the future. The new president extended...
7 Why We Hate: The Many Faces of Loathing Arrayed Against Obama
The most demonstrative expression of hatred against a political leader is the threat of violence. After seeing the Kennedys and Martin Luther King Jr. gunned down and after the foiled attempts to assassinate Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford, we are wary and hope the Secret Service is doing its job. The wild rhetoric in the McCain-Palin campaign built to such a thunderous crescendo that when...
8 Profiles in Cowardice: A Rancid Collection of Fruits, Nuts, and Psychos
Although the disgraceful bigmouths on Fox News (see chapter 9) get the most attention for their tirades against Obama, they rarely perform original spadework. Instead of using their journalistic platform and huge staff to perform true investigations or uncover the lies behind nasty smears, they choose instead to multiply and exaggerate the endless parade of falsehoods from every...
9 Fox News: The Anger Machine Gushing Out Nonstop Propaganda
If Fox News were a person, it would be Sarah Palin: lots of flash, dash, and trash; vain; saucy; treacly; boastful; insecure; insincere; mean-spirited; prone to twisting facts and exploiting emotion; loved by supporters; despised by the other side; and unsure why it is not universally adored. The raison d’être of Fox News is to deliver a singular message to make its side look good and the other side look bad. If it...
10 Fight the Smears: Obama and His Allies Build an Effective Truth Squad
When Barack Obama declared his candidacy for president on February 10, 2007, in Springfield, Illinois, where Abraham Lincoln began his political career, he was a long shot. All of the cognoscenti believed the election was Hillary Clinton’s to lose. At this point, he had completed only two years in the U.S. Senate following eight years as a state legislator in Illinois. Many people, including African Americans...
11 Conservatives with a Conscience: Lonely Voices of Reason in the Republican Wilderness
Some Republicans—though, sadly, far too few—recognize when the Rubicon has been crossed, when attacks on Obama far exceed the bounds of political rhetoric and posturing, and when their side has completely abandoned the truth and common sense. We can only hope more of them wake up to the traditional give and take of democracy. This means they...
POSTSCRIPT: The Next Step—It’s Up to Us to Restore Dignity and Decency
Do we no longer have a sense of decency as a society? That basic, simple question is central to everything in this book. We are deluged with access to more information than ever, yet millions of people remain woefully misinformed about the vital issues because they believe wrong information. This ignorance has a profound impact on their lives and on all of our lives. Zealots and demagogues...
