Editor's Notes

The typesetters for the University of North Carolina Press have indicated that they wish the proofing process to be conducted on electronic files rather than paper. For this reason, all final versions of accepted articles must be submitted in the form of an Msword file. Initial submissions of articles to EAL can be either on paper or as an electronic file.

EAL 37, 1 will be a special issue on "Interiority" guest edited by Christopher Castiglia and Julia Stern.

The Society of Early Americanists is sponsoring a summit of Ibero-American and Anglo-American colonial literature scholars at the Westward Look Resort in Tucson, AZ, on the second weekend in May, 2002. Program chair Ralph Bauer of the University of Maryland is constructing a website of primary source materials that will be of interest to teachers interested in developing a hemispheric "literature of the Americas" approach to our subject.

A complete bibliography of the writings of Norman Grabo, one of the founding circle of this journal, will appear in EAL 37, 2. His obituary notice appears in 36, 2.

Periodically works of scholarship in seventeenth-century English literature and eighteenth-century British literature appear that should be read by early Americanists. Suvir Kaul's Poems of Nation, Anthems of Empire (University Press of Virginia, 2000) is one. An astute rumination on the history of imperial verse in the eighteenth century, it renders the ambitions of the metropolis with a vividness and thoroughness approached by no other work of literary scholarship.

The American Antiquarian Society has named EAL advisory editor Philip Gura Distinguished Visiting Professor for the coming year. It has also named book review editor Sandra Gustafson and editor David Shields to the Advisory Panel of the Program in the History of the Book. Shields will chair the panel.
