Suzanne Cooper Guasco is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the College of William and Mary. Her dissertation, “Confronting Democracy: Edward Coles and the Cultivation of Authority in the Young Nation,” explores how elites, in particular, attempted to reformulate their claims to authority amidst the democratizing repercussions of the American Revolution.

Marc Egnal is professor of history at York University, Toronto. He is the author of Divergent Paths: How Culture and Institutions Have Shaped North American Growth (1996).

James Marten is professor of history at Marquette University, where he teaches courses on children’s and African American history and the Civil War era. He is the author of The Children’s Civil War (1998) and is director of the Children in Urban America Project, an on-line archive funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
