Abstract

ABSTRACT:

This article explores issues of race and nation in Cuba, focusing on Afro-Cuban culture and different demands made by antiracist activists and intellectuals after 2000. Following an anthropologic approach, I analyze the ambiguities of revolutionary discourses, which aimed to relocate the role of Afro-Cubans in the history, and Africanness in the formation of Cuba's national identity. Then, I suggest a critical analysis of this discourse and how it was used in the past, taking into consideration the relationship between culture, memory and race, and its limitations.
