Abstract:
This article examines a specific set of prewar Taiwanese philosophers, called the Sit-chûn scholars. Armed with Western ideas, these scholars were devoted to thought resistance against assimilation, which ended up building Taiwan's cultural subjectivity under Japanese rule. It is argued that their thought resistances are systematic responses to cultural and political crises. They are also compared with other East Asian philosophers of the early twentieth century.
