Abstract:
This response focuses on the debate between Thomas Dumm and Eric Santner. It shows how Santner misrepresents the New Materialism on the way to protecting doctrines of human exceptionalism and cultural internalism that can no longer be sustained. It draws upon the innovative work on species evolution by Lynn Margulis to help clarify a theme in New Materialism. And it then turns to new geologists who focusing on bumpy nonhuman planetary processes in ways that further damage the sufficiency of exceptionalism and internalism.
