Abstract:
This article analyzes the Middle English word for 'nature,' kynde, and explores how Sir Gawain and the Green Knight uses its rich denotations to unfold the relationship between identity and action. Kynde extends beyond the non-human, also implicating genealogy, chivalric culture, reputation, proper behavior, and individual moral character and action.
