In this sequel to The Castle in the Mist (BCCB 1/17), sibling duo Tess and Max return to England, this time to visit their aunt Evie in Devon-by-the-Sea. There mysterious things begin to happen: Tess pulls a magical-seeming needle from the paw of a baby tiger, and they stumble upon the notion of a quark, a scientific concept within an equation that suggests the existence of an alternate universe. Their adventures take them to a mysterious traveling carnival unbound by physical or spatial restraints, and they must find their way back to normalcy or risk being stuck in the sinister carnival forever. While the proceedings are on the slow side, Ephron offers a mixture of adventure and whimsy in this accessible fantasy, as the main characters face treacherous terrain and navigate their way to safety. This book belongs in the hands of readers who are unafraid of stretching their imagination beyond its limits.
