Penguin and Tiny Shrimp are the perfect companions for the bedtime-averse, because they are not here for a bedtime book. No blankets, pillows, toothbrushing, or baths ("Hit the road, Ducky!" says Shrimp as he flings the rubber duck away) in this story, no way. This book is an all-night party full of music, dancing, fireworks, and adventures from the Serengeti to the sea. No one gets tired. No one starts to yawn. And no one, no one falls asleep in a pile of adorable animals at the end. The story is a smartly comedic entry in the genre of the anti-bedtime story, and the exclamatory dialogue-only text adds energy and humor. Santoso's digital illustrations have the feel of colored pencil drawings, with slightly scribbly textures and a full spectrum of saturated colors. The art evokes the characters' imaginative activities, whether they're floating against a deep blue night sky in a hot air balloon or in a chaotic spread full of confetti as everyone dances, sings, and makes as much noise as they possibly can. Simple text in speech bubbles invites readaloud performance, and older kids will be eager to play the roles until they crawl into bed. This will be a joyous bedtime read.
