Abstract

Abstract:

In a context in which the growth rate of Latino businesses exceeds national rates, this qualitative study delves into the experiences of business owners in three Michigan cities for understanding relationships and processes that have led to success, as well as challenges that cause roadblocks. The Julián Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University launched the study following the Great Recession of 2007–2009. Thirty-two oral history interviews were conducted with Latino/a business owners from 2011 to 2012. Analyses show a consistent involvement of family members in businesses, how financing occurred, civic engagement by owners in local communities, and issues of racism and sexism encountered.
