This paper analyzes the role of non-being in the thought of Paul Tillich and the Daoist thinker Zhuangzi. It inverts the age-old question “Why is there something and not nothing?” in order to reveal the hidden role of non-being in cosmic creation. What we will discover is that non-being does not threaten the existence of being but re-grounds it such that being and non-being become harmonized, rendering moot any attempt to think the question of being without non-being.
