Shafer's biographical study of Antonin Artaud is a major contribution to modern theatre-history studies. Shafer explores how Artaud became a theatre icon by tracing his search for a non-western total theatre during his acting career in Paris, his ties to surrealism, and the development of his manifestos on the Theatre of Cruelty.
