Antonius Roberts

Antonius Roberts is a graduate of Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) with a BFA in Painting. As the former coordinator of FINCO Summer Art Workshops and as a teacher and lecturer at Government High School and The College of The Bahamas, Roberts has mentored a generation of young Bahamian artists. He served as the Curator of the Central Bank of The Bahamas' Art Gallery until the end of 2017, and was the architect and coordinator of their annual Competitions and Exhibitions until 2006. He also played a supportive role in the restoration of the former Villa Doyle and its conversion to the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas. In recognition of his contribution to national development in the arts he was a recipient of a Commonwealth of The Bahamas Silver Jubilee Award and of the E. Clement Bethel Award from The College of The Bahamas, as well as the Ministry of Tourism's Cacique Award for the Arts in 2000. In recognition of his contribution to national development in the arts, he was a recipient of a Commonwealth of The Bahamas Silver Jubilee Award and of the E. As an artist, he has participated in exhibitions around the world and has mounted many within The Bahamas. As a sculptor, he is best known for the first Sacred Space project at the historical Clifton Heritage site, which was followed by the installation at the Blake Road Welcome Centre. His ethos connecting man's spiritual and emotional nature and the nature itself, and his desire to record and honour Bahamian heritage is inherent in all of his paintings and sculpture. Most recently, He participated in Art Africa Miami during Art Basel (2017) in Miami Florida. In the Queen's 2018 New Year Honours, Roberts was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire—O.B.E. for his services to education, the arts, and the community.
