Abstract

Abstract :

This contribution surveys the oeuvre of Dirk van der Merwe as NT and Spirituality scholar. Apart from brief biographical remarks, the publications of Van der Merwe are characterised. Important are his emphases on the text of the NT and how it speaks to matters of faith. Method is equally significant in Van der Merwe's understanding of his role as theologian. Yet, his text-immanent exegetical approach does not fit naturally with his instinctive orientation to apply insights from the Bible to modern matters of faith. The unique way in which Van der Merwe tries to solve this inherent uneasiness, by drawing on an unlikely combination of influences from R. Bultmann and J. A. Heyns, is indicated.
