LEONARDO CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY AROUND THE WORLD

During 2017–2018, we invite you to participate in our 18-month-long celebration of Leonardo's 50th Anniversary. Half a century ago, kinetic artist and astronautical pioneer Frank Malina set out to solve the needs of the community of artists and scientists working across disciplines by using the "new media" of the time—offset print publishing. Leonardo journal represented a unique vision that served as an international channel of communication among artists, with emphasis on the writings of artists using science and developing technologies in their work.

Today, documenting and capturing the creative innovators and provocateurs of culture is not enough. If media is the messenger, then Leonardo must expand its scope to represent the unique works and challenges we face in the 21st century. As a network of networks, Leonardo is reimagining the next 50 years. We invite you to come along with us on this journey of rediscovery and reinvention. See the list of upcoming 50th anniversary events at <leonardo.info/50th-anniversary>.

April 2018 Mexico City, Mexico

This celebration is a collaboration between UNAM and UAM, coordinated by Luz María Sánchez Cardona and partners. Leonardo is also launching a 50th Celebration in Montevideo, Uruguay, the first of an event series, coordinated with a remote link to the Mexico City event. Developed by Delma Rodriguez, Anilla Cultural Latinoamérica-Europa, Montevideo, Urugay, and in cooperation with João Silviera.

May 2018 Gdansk, Poland

The IKT Congress 2018 in Gdansk will celebrate 50 years of the Leonardo network and 20 years of Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art. The IKT Symposium 2018's theme is The Common Grounds: Learning from Contexts and Communities. The idea that art has fluid borders and works at the "edges" of different disciplines, contexts and communities is not new. The symposium is organized in collaboration with Leonardo/ISAST to celebrate 50 years of growing the network of Art and Science. Coordinated by Jadwiga Charzynska.

June 2018 Helsinki, Finland

Leonardo will continue celebrating its 50th anniversary with the Aalto Festival, including the Oslofjord Ecologies Extended exhibition, Sustainable-Tourism workshops and seminar, and the Renewable Futures conference. Renewable Futures is a European network initiated by RIXC New Media center in Riga with the objective of inventing new avenues for developments of tomorrow, in culture and the creative sector on the European level.

CALL FOR PAPERS: ARTISTS AND WAR

We live in a time when war, far from being eliminated from the planet, is a continuing fact of life for many. Some wars are overt military wars, others are endemic situations of social and economic conflict. What can artists and scientists do when there is a war? How can we help to find solutions? How can we avoid the use of the military while at the same time protect the lives of innocent civilians? What educational work can we do to avoid violence and war? Historically the work of some artists and scientists has been instrumental in shaping perceptions and initiatives. Leonardo Editorial Advisor Michele Emmer and Leonardo journal seek papers discussing these and other topics that address the role and work of artists and scientists in times of war. This call is resuming after many years of hiatus. See <www.leonardo.info/opportunity/call-for-papers-artists-and-war>. [End Page 215]
