In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

  • About This Issue
  • Rodger Van Allen, Co-editor

Gordon C. Zahn, who died in 2007, would now be turning one hundred years of age. In our lead article, Benjamin T. Peters (University of Saint Joseph, Connecticut) helps us understand how the Catholic sociologist and pacifist, through his life and scholarship, had a transformative impact on Catholicism in and beyond the United States.

Ryan P. Murphy (Chestnut Hill College) in “The Hidden, Unconventional Missionary Spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Philadelphia,” examines and interprets the refocusing of organizational identity of this religious community in the decades after the Second Vatican Council.

In “Outrage in Boston: The Sexual Abuse Scandal and the Downfall of Cardinal Bernard Law,” Douglas J. Slawson (National University, San Diego) gives us the Boston experience, the way in which readers of The Boston Globe learned of the details of the tragedy which befell the Catholic Church there. The film, “Spotlight,” presented the story as experienced by the reporters. Slawson presents it from the Globe’s readers’ experience.

Our cover essay is contributed by Stephen Gambescia (Drexel University). His “Remembering Joseph M. Gambescia: A Man of Science and Faith” tells us the remarkable story of a Catholic medical doctor whose life you will find memorable.

Our award-winning book review section continues its fine work in the issue thanks to a dozen capable reviewers.

We thank them and all our contributing authors and faithful readers.

Happy 2018. [End Page i]
