Earth is desolate and drained of resources, but then an ancient transmission from an extinct alien species called the Undying suggests their technology may offer the planet hope. Seventeen-year-old scientific prodigy Jules thinks salvation lies in careful study of the wisdom of the Undying, but quick-thinking and stealthy Amelia has no time for archaeological preservation and contemplation with her fourteen-year-old sister's existence on the line. With much to prove and much more to lose, the unlikely pair join forces on the Undying's deserted home planet Gaia, racing to solve the puzzle of the ancient temples without a clue as to what is at the end of the journey. There's a beautiful blend of voice as narration alternates between Jules' nerdy theoretical knowledge of archaeology and Amelia's strategic and practical decision-making skills; together they work through the mysteries of the temples while simultaneously evading a murderous scavenger group determined to use them for their own gain. The romantic subplot between Jules and Amelia at times becomes overwhelming, though, and it frequently undermines the tension and adventure of key moments. The cliffhanger of an ending is somewhat frustrating, but readers who've become invested may find the journey sufficient to keep them invested enough to wait for a sequel. [End Page 251]
