Editors’ Note

Editors' Note The editors of the Canadian Review of American Studies are very pleased to present our readers with a two-volume special issue: Reinterpreting the AmericanExperience:Women, Gender, and American Studies. Occasionally the journal has the good fortune to be able to publish special, thematic issueswith a guest editor. We would like to take this occasion to expressour appreciation to Professor Jean Matthews of the University of Western Ontario for the thorough, imaginative, and energetic way in which she undertook the preparation of this special issue on gender in America. The eleven articles and three review essays in these volumes provide an excellentrange of multidisciplinary studies of gender, with an emphasis on history, literature, law, and sociology. In keeping with the tradition of this journal, we have sought to encourage interdisciplinary in the articles, a consciousness of issues that cross the Canadian-American border, and an effort to address some of the larger methodological questions of the disciplineof American Studies. For the information of readers, these two volumes also represent two numbers of the journal that were not published by the journal in the calendar year 1992,prior to the journal beingpublished by the University of CalgaryPress.
