One Week in the Village

Patiala, Punjab

But he saw my lost look
near other women bathing
sari tucked between my legs
both of us nearing
the daytime rattle of copper
vessels        debates about the cost
of fish and the loud
voices of those who had
no books to brace
them in the havoc
