LEONARDO CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY AROUND THE WORLD

During 2017–2018, we invite you to participate in our 18-month-long celebration of Leonardo’s 50th anniversary. Half a century ago, kinetic artist and astronautical pioneer Frank Malina set out to solve the needs of the community of artists and scientists working across disciplines by using the “new media” of the time—offset print publishing. Leonardo journal represented a unique vision that served as an international channel of communication among artists, with emphasis on the writings of artists using science and developing technologies in their work.

Today, documenting and capturing the creative innovators and provocateurs of culture is not enough. If media is the messenger, then Leonardo must expand its scope to represent the unique works and challenges we face in the 21st century. As a network of networks, Leonardo is reimagining the next 50 years. We invite you to come along with us on this journey of rediscovery and reinvention. 50th Anniversary Event at CYLAND MediaArtLab: CYFEST

Leonardo/ISAST will celebrate its 50th anniversary at CYFEST 2018. One of the largest international media art festivals, CYFEST was founded in St. Petersburg in 2007 by independent artists and curators. The festival promotes the emergence of new forms of art and high-technology interactions. CYFEST’s goal is to develop professional connections between artists, curators, engineers and programmers around the world to expose wide audiences to robotics, video, sound and net art. Chaired by Anna Frants, CYLAND MediaArtLab.

Leonardo at College Art Association Annual Conference

Scientific Delirium Madness (SDM) is a collaborative initiative of Leonardo/ISAST and the Djerassi Resident Artists Program (DRAP) that explores and expands on connections in the creativity of scientists and artists. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Margot H. Knight of DRAP and her amazing staff for a fascinating and inspiring month of art/science collaborations, ideas, explorations, “think tank” activities and overall excitement generated at this year’s SDM residency. We also thank the SDM resident artists and scientists themselves (Anna Davidson, biologist; Ken Eklund, media artist; Katharine Hawthorne, dancer/choreographer; GinaRae LaCerva, writer; Patrice Le Gal, physicist; Adria LeBoeuf, biologist; Marco Nardelli, physicist/composer; Ainissa Ramirez, materials scientist; Heather Spence, marine biologist/musician; Javiera Tejerina-Risso, media artist; Peter Walter, biologist) for taking a full month out of their busy schedules to explore together in residence.
