Otherworld 2.0 is the ultimate MMPG that allows players to live their wildest fantasies; it's also being clandestinely explored as a way for patients with physical limitations to let their minds roam free. Eighteen-year-old Simon smells something wrong, though, when his best friend Kat, recovering from an accident, pleads for help just as she's sent into the VR world. Determined to save Kat and to get to the bottom of who's behind this irresponsible beta test, Simon takes off on a dangerous and adventurous journey into Otherworld, where he meets up with gamer friends and fights VR monsters. Chapters oscillating between realities are mind-boggling as readers work to make sense of time lapses in events across worlds. Segel and Miller take the time to create a thrilling plot and also elegantly build an entire alternate universe, complete with governing systems and rising internal tensions. The ending is disappointingly anticlimactic, presumably in preparation for the forthcoming sequel, but readers will nonetheless enjoy the thrill and suspense of the ride. MK
