In the past two years, democratic socialism has been put back on the political map in the United States, gaining a relevance it has not enjoyed in decades. This has raised some important questions: How do we speak about socialism in a language that is accessible and appealing to millions of Americans? How do we define the term? And what does a new-found ability to discuss socialism bring to the table that is distinct from the outlook of past social movement mobilizations—such as Occupy Wall Street—that burst onto the scene in recent decades?
