Visual Culture & Gender (http://vcg.emitto.net) was conceived and published in 2005 as the first multimedia online journal in the field of art education, and the first online journal devoted to visual culture and gender. It is an online, international, freely accessible, and critical annual publication that focuses on the intersections of visual culture and gender. Committed to exploiting the media potentials of new technology and to including a plethora of color images and hyperlinks to extend context, the co-editors experimented with forms rarely seen before in any journal. This article documents the history of this unique journal and explores the controversy, changing media potentials over time, and exhibiting other shifts in academic publishing.
