THE ASSOCIATION

The Southern Historical Association will hold its eighty-third annual meeting in Dallas, Texas, on November 9–12, 2017, Thursday through Sunday. Printed programs will be mailed to members this month, but meeting highlights and information on tours and the off-site functions organized by our Local Arrangements Committee, chaired by Stephanie Cole, University of Texas at Arlington, are already accessible at thesha.org. The Sheraton Dallas Hotel will serve as our headquarters; reservations can be made through its website, https://tinyurl.com/shareservations.

This year's Graduate Student Luncheon, "Building Your Academic Brand," will seat graduate students with scholars in the same or allied fields for intense small-group discussions of academic branding, professional networking, social media management, pitching publishers, and more. To ensure that our groups cohere and because space is limited, the SHA Graduate Student Council is asking that interested graduate students preregister for the luncheon by sending a short (150–200 word) abstract and CV to shagraduatecouncil@gmail.com by October 13. Participants must be members of the Southern Historical Association. Availability is limited. Please follow the SHA Graduate Council on Twitter (@SHAGradCouncil) for updates.

All graduate students and recent Ph.D.s (within three years of completion of their doctorates) who are presenting at this year's meeting are encouraged to submit their papers for consideration for the William F. Holmes Award for the best paper given at the annual meeting. To be considered, papers should be submitted via email to manager@thesha.org by October 1, 2017. Each entry should have a cover sheet that includes the author's name, the paper title, and the author's institution along with the month and year (or the expected month and year) of graduation. This year's award committee consists of Lisa Lind quist Dorr, University of Alabama, chair; Janet Allured, McNeese State University; and Robert Elder, Valparaiso University. See http://thesha.org/awards for further details.

The 2018 Program Committee, co-chaired by Lorri Glover, Saint Louis University, and Megan Taylor Shockley, Clemson University, has issued a call for papers for the eighty-fourth annual meeting, which will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, on November 8–11, 2018. All submissions should be made electronically through thesha.org. The deadline for submissions is September 15, 2017. As a reminder, the SHA's Executive Council modified one of its rules for program participants. Formerly the Association observed what is often called the "two-year off" rule, which required individuals who have been on a particular program to sit out the next two meetings. The new rule makes an exception for chairs and commentators, who will only be required to sit out one year. The Association strongly encourages proposals that reflect racial, gender, and institutional diversity. Individuals interested in finding prospective co-panelists may do so through SHA's online partner, H-South. [End Page 761]

The 2017 Nominating Committee, consisting of Rebecca Sharpless, Texas Christian University, chair; Beverly G. Bond, University of Memphis; Lesley J. Gordon, University of Alabama; Barbara Krauthamer, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and John C. Rodrigue, Stonehill College, calls for recommendations from the SHA membership for the office of vice president/president-elect and for members of the Executive Council. The committee will finalize and announce its nominees at the meeting in Dallas. Recommendations for vice president/president-elect should take the form of letters detailing the significance of the nominee's scholarship and service to the SHA and should be sent to Rebecca Sharpless, Department of History, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas 76129. Postcard forms included in the program can be used to recommend nominees for the Executive Council.
