His Macdonald, My Creighton, Biography, and the Writing of History

Despite its shortcomings, Donald Creighton’s biography of Sir John A. Macdonald remains a milestone in Canadian historical writing. My biography of Donald Creighton therefore borrows from Creighton’s Sir John A. Macdonald at the same time as it seeks to avoid its errors. Reflecting on the relationship between biographers and their subjects, I also consider the utility of biography to the writing of history.

Malgré ses lacunes, la biographie de sir John A. Macdonald par Donald Creighton constitue toujours un jalon dans l’historiographie canadienne. Ma biographie de Donald Creighton emprunte par conséquent à sa biographie de Macdonald, tout en cherchant à enéviter les erreurs. En réfléchissant à la relation entre les biographes et leur objet d’étude, je me penche aussi sur l’utilité de la biographie pour l’écriture de l’histoire.
