This essay addresses issues of framing, first voice, and authority in presenting culture in public programs. It examines a cultural presentation at the First Americans Festival inaugurating the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian and the manner in which a “presented” artist appropriated the presenter’s role for dialoguing with the visitors about who they were and what they did.
