  • A Letter from the Editors

Dear Readers,

Were you angry and heartbroken when you read about the budget plan that President Trump recently released, which includes elimination of funding for the National Endowment of the Arts, the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting? We were. If you are one of our cherished readers living in Wisconsin, you might also be troubled by Governor Scott Walker's budget proposal which would allow students to opt out of University allocable segregated fees. This portion of student fees currently breaks down to about $170.00 per student each semester and provides funding for a variety of student activities, events, and artistic endeavors on campus. We'll be clear: this funding helps enormously with the production of ccr.

It is true that the political and economic atmosphere might look grim for the arts right now. And yet, this is not a doom and gloom sort of letter. In fact, cream city review is thriving! It has not always been easy, but we have so much appreciation for UWM Student Involvement, who allot us funds from allocable segregated fees each semester which helps allow us to publish and host new and established writers from around the world. And, of course, we have so much respect and appreciation for our donors, subscribers, and every reader who might simply come upon our journal for the first time only to fall in love with a piece from a burgeoning writer or an established poet. Losing any of these sources of support would make a drastic and negative difference to the journal. [End Page 6]

In this issue, we feature texts from writers that have used the slippery, imprecise tool of language to explore who they are and where they find their homes. The beauty in the diversity of voices represented here is our ongoing "thank you" to all those who support the journal and a promise to our readers that we will continue to fight for the ideology that support of the arts is not trivial, but necessary.

With gratitude,

Loretta & Mollie [End Page 7]
