Scruff has a knack for sniffing out sausages, and even as he sleeps, his front paws are perched at his lips as images of all kinds of sausages—"teeny ones, spicy ones, big fat juicy ones, curly ones, stinky ones, and even veggie ones"—flood his dreams. In his waking life they appear everywhere, especially at The Saucy Sausage, where the butcher stuffs and displays them in the window for all to see. (How much temptation can one pup endure?) When exactly one hundred sausages are stolen from The Saucy Sausage storefront, all signs point to the neighborhood sausage connoisseur on all fours, so Scruff puts his nose to the ground to find the missing links and the real sausage-swiping culprit. While there's some amusement in the campy detective drama, it's Scruff's hungry worldview that really brings the comedy here. There's a happy mid-century flair to Zommer's digital art; short curly strokes give Scruff an easygoing, shaggy appearance, and lots of white space keeps even [End Page 432] the highly detailed scenes airy and unfussy. Stone walls, iron posts, clock towers, and a driver steering from the right seat reveal the book's British setting and add picturesque impact for American viewers. Don't miss the meaty endpapers that support Scruff's perspective: sausages are everywhere. [End Page 433]
