In this stand-alone novel set in the epic world of Turner's previous Queen's Thief titles (starting with The Thief, BCCB 11/96), the story focuses in on Kamet, who holds significant power as a slave in an important home, and who therefore initially isn't interested in escape. Fate has other plans, though, and soon Kamet finds himself paired with an Attolian companion, the two traveling by various methods toward Attolia, if they aren't murdered, captured, enslaved, or done in by harsh nature along the way. There are a lot of layers in the political, cultural, and power-related reasons for their danger, but also in the friendship that develops between Kamet [End Page 429] and his fellow traveler, known only as "the Attolian." The bond ultimately proves an unbreakable one, and Kamet, slowly coming into his own as a person who can give because he wants, not because he must, is a memorable and unusual protagonist. Fans of the other books will spot some familiar characters and they'll certainly recognize the complex emotional and political machinations. Turner's absolutely got a flair for the dramatic, and Kamet's harrowing adventure fits in perfectly with her other books in this world.
