Things are looking grim in 2085 on Earth, and Benny jumps at the chance to attend a special camp for the best and brightest at a lunar resort. He's sad to leave his beloved family, but he knows that part of the trip includes a financial reward that he can use to help his scrappy group of survivors when he returns. Soon Benny and his motley new group of friends learn that Earth is at risk from aliens determined to take over the planet for themselves. It turns out a brilliant rogue who knows about the upcoming invasion chose this elite group of kids to hide out on the moon, starting a new civilization to preserve humanity—but Benny's not willing to let Earth go just yet. Of course, a group of kids determined to save a ruined Earth from absolute annihilation against a seemingly unstoppable and uber-powerful alien race is unlikely stuff, but it's what good middle-school sci-fi is made of, and Benny's a great everykid with whom readers can connect. The book offers a passel of tasty elements: zippy space chases, a diverse cast of kids, complex humans whose good intentions don't compensate for their villainous choices, and intriguing aliens whose perspective isn't so different from that of humans. That's a lot of enjoyment, and the sequel will likely be eagerly anticipated. [End Page 416]
