Mark Twain at Home and Abroad
Abstract

The clash between home and away, here and elsewhere, which is central to Mark Twain’s writings, has inspired three recent books. One looks at the importance of home in Twain’s life and the theme of domesticity in his writings. Conversely, another examines Twain’s overseas travel, emphasizing its significance to both his literary career and his family life. Continuing with the international theme, a third book studies how China and the Chinese figure in Twain’s writings and how his works continue to reverberate in China today.
