Abstract

ABSTRACT:

The previously uncollected “Sue” (1892) and “A Southern Silhouette” (1899) appear here for the first time since their original periodical publication. Featuring white—or race-neutral—characters and set in the West and South, respectively, they offer insight into Dunbar’s seemingly anomalous later works, including The Uncalled (1899) and The Love of Landry (1900), that feature similar themes, characters, and settings.
