Elliott Carter Studies Online. Edited by Marguerite Boland and John Link. Published annually. Vol. 1 (2016). No ISSN. Online format. http://studies.elliottcarter.org.

Elliott Carter Studies Online is a new open-access, peer-reviewed journal “devoted to the music, life, and times of the American composer Elliott Carter (1908–2012).” It covers a very wide range of topics and has no restrictions on disciplinary perspectives. In addition to articles specifically about Elliott Carter and his works, the journal also accepts submissions focusing on relevant broader topics, such as music and politics, music and philosophy, or music and poetry.

Journal contents are divided into two categories. The first is full-length articles, which go through a blind peer review process. The second is “Carteriana,” which includes oral histories, personal essays, reviews, media, and more. The journal makes good use of its online format through the thoughtful incorporation of many interactive elements, such as hyperlinks to external resources, mouseover footnotes and references within the text of each article, audio, videos, animations, and photographs.

The inaugural issue of Elliott Carter Studies Online features an album leaf with a brief commentary, four “Carteriana,” and two articles. The “Carteriana” include a short poem, the text of 25 letters relating to the promotion of Carter’s Syringa, a personal account of an encounter with Elliott Carter in 1976, and a transcription of a talk given by Elliott Carter in 1994. The first article discusses the nature and presentation of the theme in Carter’s Variations for Orchestra, while the second article examines Carter’s different compositional techniques of musical interaction, drawing upon examples present in four of his works. The second article was originally published in French in a collection of papers from a 2008 conference, and appears in Elliott Carter Studies Online in its original American English for the first time.

Elliott Carter Studies Online is published by The Amphion Foundation, an organization founded in 1987 by Elliott Carter and his wife, Helen, to support and encourage the [End Page 576] performance of contemporary concert music, particularly by American composers.

At the time of this writing, Elliott Carter Studies Online is not indexed in Ulrich’s, nor is it included in the Directory of Open Access Journals. However, a bibliographic record is available in WorldCat (OCLC #948667896).
