Abstract:
La Mule sanz frain, usually read as an Arthurian parody, simultaneously advances and undercuts tantalizing claims to veiled spiritual meaning, interrogating the formal bases and the stakes of chivalric romance’s fraught relationship with allegorical reading and writing after Chrétien de Troyes and in parallel to the Queste del Saint Graal.
