This essay studies what I would call a natural hermeneutics represented by Plato and the Chinese Taoist philosopher Zhuangzi. I propose that both philosophers conceive of a hermeneutics that emphasizes the primacy of innate divisions or inborn patterns. The concept of natural hermeneutics, I suggest, points to a new methodological tool.
