Genesis is part of the wealthy elite of Miami while her cousin Maddie comes from the poorer side of the family, but Maddie’s sucked in when Genesis engineers a secret spring break trip to Colombia, where the cousins’ family is from. In Colombia, however, the rich kids are kidnapped and led through the jungle by what turns out to be two terrorist groups working together—one out for money, and the other to make a statement of protest against American intervention in Colombian affairs. The danger and the politics are liberally seasoned with relationship drama: Genesis has to deal with her Miami boyfriend, whose attempts at macho meddling put the whole group in danger, but whose real offense is that he’s been cheating on her. Fortunately, there is another, more worthy kidnappee for her to transfer her affections to. Maddie has her own troubles and triumphs, as her insulin is running low and she’s falling in love with a resourceful nerdy boy who is plotting an escape. Frothy A-list clique drama playing out in an exotic setting rife with danger and political import? What could be bad? Depends on how readers feel about cliffhanger endings that set up a sequel, which is how this nail-biter ends. [End Page 285]
