Abstract

This study examines the correlates that distinguish between editors and noneditors in the field of higher education. The correlates examined are research productivity, the allocation of time for research and teaching, professional contacts of faculty, membership in professional associations, and characteristics of the scholars’ doctoral training program. The conceptual perspective is drawn from the literature on scholarly recognition; editorial board appointments are defined as one form of scholarly recognition. Data are reported for matched pairs of editors and noneditors drawn from the ASHE Directory and conclusions are drawn about correlates that differentiate between the two groups.
