This article generalizes the expectations and experiences of persons changing from the role of university administrator to professor. Nine concerns are discussed, the most pervasive of which is the difference in thinking styles demanded by those roles. Twenty-four former executives contributed data as well as advice for those contemplating such a move. Conclusions emphasize the success of persons making this transition, the paucity of relevant institutional policies, and the need for additional related research.
