Abstract

How do universities compare with businesses in managing revenue decline? No research to date has examined the impact of decline on university management practices. The four authors questioned 3,406 individuals from 334 colleges and universities, thirty-four of which had experienced declining revenues between 1977 and 1982, to see if twelve attributes of declining business organizations occurred more frequently in colleges and universities experiencing decline. The significant differences came not between declining and stable organizations, or between those with stable and unstable budgets but between growing and static organizations. Implications for future research and management practices are also discussed.
