Organizational arrangements which facilitate scholarship hamper service to society and vice versa. The traditional subdivision of North American universities into disciplinary faculties, professional schools, and institutes is one response to this problem, but such specialization leaves the institutions ill-equipped to respond to contemporary demands for greater responsiveness and accountability. This essay identifies the limitations of existing proposals for enhancing universities’ responsiveness and recommends cultivating dualism within disciplinary faculties.
